Future Plans for the site (Autumn 2001)

gerontius.net UK choirs Discussion Board: gerontius.net questions and answers: Future Plans for the site (Autumn 2001)
By Tim on Wednesday, September 26, 2001 - 08:46 am:

I thought visitors to the site might be interested to know what future plans we have.

We're always open to suggestions, but ...

Top of the list at the moment is a database of music for sale / hire. Several choirs have web pages which list music in their library which they are willing to sell or hire. What's lacking (so far as we know) is a central database of these sets of music.

We plan a database much along the lines of the current concert diary. Member choirs will be able to add their own sets of music to the database. Other choirs will be able to search by keyword, composer, title ...

We would be interested to hear from

a) anyone who thinks this is a good idea
b) anyone who thinks this is a poor idea (please say why!)
c) anyone who has a music library who would like to supply us some test data (a list or a web page of music) and perhaps help us test the new database

Incidentally we do run two parallel gerontius sites, the live one you all see, and a test one. The test one is usually a few weeks ahead of the live one. If anyone is willing to offer us some help in testing new versions of the site, please get in touch. If you have a suggestion, please email us, or better still post it here. Thanks.

Yes, I would be interested in a music for hire database. I did hear that NFMS intended to have one but I don't think they've made any progress.

You would probably need a batch upload facility. If anyone has a large library already recorded in a database they probably wouldn't want to spend ages rekeying data.

I have our library in an Access database if that would help.

A test version of the music hire database is now up and running. It's at : http://www.gerontius.net/test1/

We hope that this is going to be a really useful facility for choirs and would welcome your help in getting it right!
We'd be grateful for any suggestions or feedback.

If you have your choir music library in a neat form (word table, spreadsheet, database etc), we would be very pleased to receive a copy to use on the test system.

We would also be interested to hear from choirs who are interested in putting their music library on the live database in due course.

Yes, I think a music database is a good idea.

We (Sotto Voce) cannot offer music for hire as we mostly buy and keep our own music as there are less than 20 of us.
