Music Director required by The Lea Singers chamber choir of Harpenden, Herts

Lea Singers – Registered Charity 1099155

Music Director Vacancy – January 2009

The Lea Singers, originally formed in 1960 by a group of friends, is now a leading amateur chamber choir, comprising some 25 auditioned singers who rehearse weekly and give 6 – 7 concerts per annum.

The choir is based in Harpenden, Hertfordshire and the rehearsal venue is close to the railway station and just 30 minutes from London by train.

The choir enjoys singing a wide range of music, from Medieval/Renaissance to modern arrangements and commissioned works. Concerts are typically based on a theme, and may be entirely a cappella, or with accompaniment ranging from organ or piano up to chamber orchestra. Soloists may be professionals, or taken from the choir. Typically orchestral concerts are held every 18 – 24 months.

Performance venues include local churches and halls in Harpenden, Hertfordshire and occasionally wider afield. There are weekend trips to cathedrals and in the past the choir has toured abroad.

The choir enjoys good working relationships with many local musicians and groups (including leading musicians such as Robert Hollingworth, Terence Charlston, Miles Golding and Adrian Bending). It also aims to put something back into the community through Singing Days and Children’s concerts. Over the years it has raised significant sums for a variety of charities.

Rehearsals are held weekly during school terms on a Wednesday at St George’s School, Harpenden between 7.45 and 10pm. Rehearsals are held without a pianist.

The choir has had nine conductors since its formation, most recently Madeleine Lovell, who is leaving the choir to take up the specially created role of Musical Director at Queen’s College, Cambridge..

The choir has produced two CDs in recent times, including Sing Joyfully, under the direction of Madeleine Lovell, covering Vaughan Williams’ Mass in G minor, Stanford’s Op 39 motets and other English church music.

More details concerning this opportunity together with details of past and future concerts and performed pieces can be found on the Lea Singers web site http://leasingers.co.uk/ or on the gerontius web site http://www.gerontius.net/
