About The Liturgical Music Courses

The Liturgical Music Courses offer splendid opportunities for singers with recent choral experience and some sight-reading abilities to perform in some of England’s most beautiful settings.

If you’ve never been on a Liturgical Music Course before, don’t be shy! In previous years singers have come from all over the UK and, in some cases, far beyond. We were joined by choral society singers, members of chamber choirs, professional musicians, teachers.....in the words of one of the participants, "How could anyone who sings not want to take part?"

The courses contain plenty to interest and challenge all choral singers. If you are an experienced church musician you will be introduced to new works and new techniques, and you will participate in a vigorous programme of performances. If you have little or no background in liturgical music you will encounter a new context for your singing – a context that brings a deeper understanding of traditional choral repertoire. All singers will have the opportunity, if they so wish, to get involved in small group or even solo work, all supported by specialist tutors.

Sheet music and practice CDs are provided well in advance of the courses and singers are expected to have undertaken some preparation before they arrive. We aim to create balanced chamber choirs of between thirty-five and forty-five voices. All of the courses contain at least one concert performance, but most of the public events are within cathedral services, when we get to experience fine choral music in its true context.
