Re: [johno] How to find work in music - Agencies, choirs, self promotion?

Hi Johno

I was waiting for another, more qualified person to reply, so sorry for the long delay!

I thought maybe suggesting she sign up to an agency

Doesn't sound as if your gf is a professional (yet), so probably not much point.

She's currently singing in a choir, but only once a week tops. Is this a good pass time?

Yes, absolutely!

Should she search for more choirs to practice with?

Yes, absolutely! The more singing she gets, the better... Presumably, you're signed up with Gerontius and will be getting regular notifications of postings in the Forums from choirs looking for singers. Her network will soon grow. For example, a few months ago, someone asked me to sing at a funeral (I've been singing at weddings for years, but this was new...) - the Funeral Director was impressed at our little group, and since then we have been doing two or three a week as he has recommended a choir to his 'clients'. You never know where the next singing job will come from!

Are there better choirs to promote yourself with?

Assuming that she's not singing with The Sixteen or The Tallis Scholars or The BBC Singers or Polyphony, then Yes, absolutely!

I was considering making some promotional material, like a website. Is this worthwhile?

If you have the time, it can't hurt. I wouldn't worry about keeping music secure, after all, if anyone wants to knick it, she's probably on the way to stardom :)

She should also find herself a singing teacher - not only will her technique and audition skills improve (and she will need both), but the teacher will also have many invaluable contacts.

Best of luck.

By the way, you don't say where you're located, but my choir, a runner-up in last year's BBC Choir of The Year, is always looking for good singers, we're in the Reading area.
