What's a community choir?

Someone asked me, and I had to admit I'm not sure.

Could anyone come up with a definition of a community choir, or perhaps say what the features of a community choir usually are?

Re: [Tim] What's a community choir?

I would say it is a choir that exists primarily to give a chance to sing to people who wish to do so, as against a choir that exists primarily to impress an audience. It follows that a formal audition procedure which acts as a bar to membership would be inappropriate. It also follows that the choice of repertoire should be made with the choir members in mind rather than the preferences of the conductor or of a potential audience. (I conduct a community orchestra and that is how we define it.)

Chris Rowbury's blog gives a lot of information about the community choir world.

That's a helpful link.

Chris asks the same question, and answers it here

Does anyone have anything to add?

What's in a name? Marlow Community Choir at Borlase (MD Gillian Dibden) was formed in 2006 as an initiative of the Sir William Borlase's Grammar School in Marlow as a community outreach initiative when the school was granted Performing Arts status in order to bring together parents, relatives, friends, teachers and the wider community from a 10-15 mile radius around the town.

The policy is Open Access with a wide range of abilities. The choir is supported by the local education authority and has grown in srength and experience. The next concert, Britten's Saint Nicolas brings together two Bucks-based choirs (MCCaB and Taplow Girls' Choir) at a Berkshire venue (All Saints church in Maidenhead, SL6 4HE) on 31st January reflecting the essence of Community.

Re: [Tim] What's a community choir?

Jackie Roxborough did an interesting session on community choirs at the ABCD convention this year. I wrote a blog post about it afterwards:

I know this reply is rather late, but that's the way conversations sometimes happen round here!
