Singing in a Choir - how and where to start

Hello,

I love singing, like most humans do, but dont have a very good voice. I sang in the primary school choir and in a few mass choirs while in uni. I got in beacuse of my enthusiasm and because I did what i was told. I am interested in joining a choir. My problem (and that of many others, i suspect) is I honestly believe I would not fit into any of the choirs that are advertising in the Belfast area (I live in Lisburn), because I certainly am not what they are looking for. I feel i could do with a little practice to the level that I would not hold the choir back. Plus I cannot read musical scores.

Do choirs generally allow new entrants to just sit in for a few weeks to "learn the ropes" etc ?

Any good internet resources to get me started ?

Thanks

LarryBee

Re: [LarryBee] Singing in a Choir - how and where to start

Hi Larrybee
I think probably what you are after is a community choir - normally songs are taught by ear, sometimes with music alongside.
There are a few teachers in both Northern and republic of Ireland listed on the Natural Voice Network at http://www.naturalvoice.net/index.asp
I suggest you try emailing them - even if they don't have their own choirs they may know someone who does.
Don't give up!
Caroline

Hello Caroline,

Thanks for your advice. Sorry for the delay, u got caught up in a few things towards the end of summer, and I only read your message today. It seems the Natural Voice Network website is not running anymore. Any other pointers ?

Thanks again,

Larry.

Hi Larry
Indeed you're right - it was still running when I replied to you previously.
You don't say where you are based but probably your local council or library is the next place to try. If you're in London there is loads going on. Rurally more difficult.
Hope you find somewhere!
Caroline

Sorry. just reread your first post - Ireland is nowhere near London!
Try Paula Ryan - she's based in York but may know what's going on in the Irish scene

Another suggestion would be to contact Chris Rowbury who is a member of the Natural Voice Practitioners Network. It looks like there might be a problem with their website.

His blog is here: http://blog.chrisrowbury.com/
