Do you find reading music difficult?

John Ruskin Choral Society is holding a free informal session on musical notation and basic music reading skills. We find these days some people are put off of singing choral music because they can't read music or have a poor understanding of musical notation. For many this will put people off of having a go at singing in choirs or at least make them feel insecure when faced with a vocal score of the Mozart Requiem.
Therefore the John Ruskin Choral Society have decided to hold an informal workshop on musical notation and basic music reading skills.
This will take place on 11 April 2012 at Shirley Methodist Church, Eldon Avenue, Shirley from 7.45pm to 9.45pm. There is no fee for attending this session and all people are welcome. We will assume as a starting point that everyone will have very little knowledge of musical notation. Bring some paper (for notes), a pencil, your hands and your voices.
The session will be led by our conductor Adrian Connell, who is well known in the area as a composer and arranger. Adrian has worked in music publishing for 25 years and his main job during this time was note-setting scores for publication and performance by orchestras worldwide. He has worked with some of the leading notational specialists in the UK including Elaine Gould the author of Behind Bars, the best all round book on musical notation ever written. He has also worked with many of today's composers including Thomas Ades, George Benjamin, Oliver Knussen and Colin and David Matthews.
Don't fret this won't be a heavy lecture or a two hour speech. Be prepared for some fun rhythm and vocal games.
