London Choral Workshops -Stand up for yourself!

Fundamental to healthy singing are good posture and effective breath control. The whole body is involved in singing - legs and pelvis, spine and ribs, head and neck, shoulders and arms - so in this session we will begin looking at which muscles to energise and which to release, and how to develop a healthy and effective posture. Next, breathing in and breathing out - the most natural thing to do, but a source of much concern and mystery to singers (and conductors!). We will have a fresh look at this whole area and explore what is meant by 'good support'. Finally, we can go on to explore just how this knowledge of posture and how the body works is to being present and aware while performing.

The repertoire in this session will provide us with some contrasting opportunities to look at breath control in long legato phrases and lively rhythmic ones, at various tempos and dynamics:

Mozart - Ave verum corpus
Tavener - Song for Athene
Carissimi - 'Plorate, filii Israel' from Jephte
Ravel - 'Nicolette' and 'Trois beaux oiseaux du Paradis' from Trois chansons.
