CROWD OUT
Saturday 21 June 2014

Wanted: 1000 voices to form a crowd....

We are inviting you to take part in one of the largest vocal projects ever staged in East London. Performing alongside 999 other local people, CROWD OUT, celebrates the energy and excitement of crowds through sound. The new piece is the work of one of America’s leading composers, David Lang who has taken his inspiration from crowd reaction at public events. Participants will get a rare chance to work with one of the world’s leading choral directors, British conductor Simon Halsey, Chorus Director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Chorus, Choral Director of the London Symphony Orchestra and Director of the BBC Proms Youth Choir. Training workshops will be led by Isabelle Adams, responsible for the community chorus in Spitalfields Music’s award winning community opera, We Are Shadows.

David Lang says of CROWD OUT: “I wanted to make a music experience with nothing between the music and the listener... My first thought was to get rid of instruments. My next idea was to get rid of pitches. My next idea was to get rid of the concert hall. My next idea was to get rid of professionals. My last idea was to get rid entirely of the distinction between the
performers and the audience themselves.”

Families, individuals, schools, choral conductors, groups of friends, choirs, are all invited to take part. No singing or musical experience is required, just a desire to be part of a truly extraordinary international event and to make your voice heard.
