Stanford Stabat Mater notes

Hello - I've just joined. I live in France but keep up with Uk musical life. Our French choir is about to start rehearsing the Stanford Stabat Mater and our conductor is looking for some detailed analytical musical notes for this (in France) relatively unfamiliar work. Can anyone help with either notes or an idea of where to go looking please?

Re: [JohnCH] Stanford Stabat Mater notes

Well there's a small amount of nformation on this site, including an excellent colour chart which shows who sings what movement : http://www.stabatmater.dds.nl/stanford.html

.. and there is a recording on the chandos label. Perhaps the booklet notes will help?

Re: [JohnCH] Stanford Stabat Mater notes

I am glad to see that this work is being performed in France because it seems prohibitively expensive to do in the North West of England. Vocal scores are not available in the library system and we were quoted over £400 for their hire. The orchestral set was over £300 to hire which seems extortionate for a 45 minute out of copywright work. When one has hired soloists the bill is in excess of £1500 before the orchestra is fixed! And that is only one half of a concert. I suggested to B&H that they donate a set a vocal scores to the british library so they would make money on part-hire. I have not had a reply. Liverpool Library would not purchase vocal scores because they refuse to contemplate spiral-bound archive material. Rather short sighted I think!

BTW, back on topic, I agree that the Chandos CD notes by Lewis Foreman are a good bet. You could also look for Jeremy Dibble's book on Stanford, though I don't recall whether the Stabat Mater is discussed in detail.

Re: [Jim] Stanford Stabat Mater notes

Thank you very much - I have the Chandos recording and the notes are good, and a friend very kindly sent me an abstract of the notes about the work by Jeremy Dibble which turned out to be exactly what was needed. We are doing the work with a choir from Coventry and I believe the scores are being reprinted specially at around £15 each. Hm We also investigated hiring but did not get any further, now I see why! Thanks again everyone
