Lancaster: Ripley Choral Weekend Can't Post

Ripley Choral Weekend

Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th June 2008

Ripley St Thomas Chapel, Lancaster

Ripley St Thomas School, Lancaster is holding two events in this first Choral Weekend.

2.00pm Saturday 28th June - Choral Workshop

A unique opportunity to watch two outstanding choral directors working with choirs from two very different traditions. Ralph Allwood, well known as founder of the Eton Choral Courses and presently Precentor and Director of Music at Eton College and conductor of the Rodolphus Choir, will present a workshop with the young choristers of Ripley St Thomas School. This choir was formed in September 2007 and has already given several successful performances in the school’s lovely chapel and sung evensong at Carlisle Cathedral and St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. Ralph Allwood will direct the choir in the rehearsal of pieces from the English choral tradition. As a most experienced director of workshops all over the world, we look forward to his tremendous enthusiasm, charisma and wonderful sense of humour.

The Aurin Girls’ Choir from the Kodály Music School, Kecskemét in Hungary are guests at Ripley for this weekend, as part of their fifth UK tour. In 2006 the choir won two gold medals in the World Choir Games in China and first prize at the Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod. The choir, from Kodály’s birthplace, is one of many at the Kodály Music School, where they have an enviable musical training under the direction of their conductor, László Durányik. He studied at the famous Liszt Academy in Budapest, has won several conducting prizes and has given workshops in Korea, Australia and England as well as in his native Hungary. László Durányik will give a demonstration of some of the techniques used in training his choir and will rehearse some Hungarian repertoire.

The afternoon will end with a short concert given by both choirs.

The Open Rehearsals will be from 2.00pm and the Concert will be at 5.00pm

Day Tickets are £5 and are available on the door, or in advance from reception.
