Call for Papers & Presentations - Phenomenon of Singing International Symposium VII, July 2-5, 2009.

Festival 500 Sharing the Voices, in cooperation with Memorial University of Newfoundland, invites proposals for papers and presentations at The Phenomenon of Singing International Symposium VII. This Symposium is an integral academic component of the renowned Festival 500 international choral festival. The purpose of the Symposium is to gather international expertise and provide a forum for interdisciplinary discourse and performance, the dissemination of research, and the generation of further knowledge relating to the phenomenon of singing. The Symposium invites submissions relating to all aspects of singing and the voice. Submissions relating to the 2009 special focus area for Festival 500, The Power of Song, are encouraged as well. The Phenomenon of Singing International Symposium VII will take place July 2-5, 2009, in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, on the campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland.

1) PROPOSAL INFORMATION
Proposal submissions should consist of a 250-word abstract addressing focus areas of singing such as artistic, physiological, cultural, sociological, historical, pedagogical, psychological, compositional... and beyond! A diversity of presentation formats is welcome. These could include paper presentation, lecture-demonstration, lecture-recital, panel and roundtable discussions. Standard presentations are generally 20-minutes in length, followed by a 10-minute dialogue period. Selected papers will be published in the Symposium VII Proceedings.

2) POSTER SESSIONS
The Symposium offers a poster session opportunity to share current research and/or practice with the world’s top voice and choral scholars! Poster Sessions will be scheduled throughout the Symposium.

3) SUBMISSION INFORMATION
The deadline for submissions is October 15, 2008. Proposals may be submitted by mail, fax, or E-mail. Please indicate your institutional affiliation and e-mail address with your submission. As well, indicate clearly whether your submission is to be considered for paper/presentation or poster session. Send submissions to:

4) 2009 INVITED PRESENTERS
Paul Hillier (UK/Estonia)
Paul Hillier enjoys a busy career as conductor, singer, teacher, editor, musicologist and writer. One of the world’s foremost choral conductors, he is Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, Founder and Director of Theatre of Voices, and Artistic Director of the National Chamber Choir of Ireland. Highly regarded for his work in both contemporary and early music, Paul has over a hundred CDs and several books (Arvo Pärt and Steve Reich) to his credit.

Wendy Nielsen (Canada)
Whether in concert, opera, or recital, Wendy Nielsen enchants audiences with her sumptuous voice and engaging presence. With a long history with the Metropolitan Opera, she has performed in opera houses around the world. Wendy has also sung with the New York Philharmonic, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and orchestras of Toronto, Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa, Minnesota, Milwaukee, Prague, Krahow, and Budapest.

Avner Itai (Israel)
Head of Choral Activities at the Rubin Academy of Music, Tel Aviv University, Israeli-born Avner Itai began his career as an oboist with the Israel Chamber Orchestra. The American conductor Robert Shaw inspired him to focus his activities on choral music and conducting. Avner has toured Israeli choirs the world over, particularly dedicating his interested and energy to his "Songs of Peace" concerts.

Howard Goodall (United Kingdom)
Britain’s first ever National Ambassador for Singing, Howard Goodall is leading a 4-year, £40m government program, Sing Up, to make every British primary school a singing school. Well-known as a composer of TV themes (Mr. Bean, Blackadder, Red Dwarf ), choral music, stage musicals, film and TV scores, Howard is an award-winning broadcaster and producer of his own BBC documentaries. His energy, passion and commitment to music and music education have made Howard one of Britain’s greatest musical assets.

Laurier Fagnan (Canada)
Professor of choral music at University of Alberta Campus Saint-Jean (Canada), Laurier Fagnan is recognized internationally for his innovative research in applying specific methods of bel canto singing to choral singing. Laurier’s vocal acoustics laboratory, the first of its kind in Canada, allows researchers to improve singers’ performance by visually representing the sound frequencies of their songs. Thomas Mapfumo (Zimbabwe)
Thomas Mapfumo is known as "The Lion of Zimbabwe" for his immense popularity and the political influence his music carries through the power of song. His chimurenga music is based on traditional Shona mbira music with lyrics characterized by social and political commentary. "Our music speaks for the people. We are influenced by the people who are struggling at home. Their voices have been silenced. Someone has got to talk."

5) COME SOLO TO FESTIVAL 500
Immediately following the Symposium is the eight-day choral festival. Festival 500 Sharing the Voices offers a special opportunity to Symposium presenters and delegates who would like to participate in this event. As a Come Solo participant you can take part in workshops, hear choirs from around the world each evening, participate in a massed choir and sing/perform in the Grande Finale.

6) EARN GRADUATE CREDIT - FESTIVAL 500 CHORAL INSTITUTE
Earn graduate credit by attending the Choral Institute co-sponsored by Festival 500 and Memorial University of Newfoundland. Both the
Faculty of Education and School of Music at Memorial University offer a complement of graduate courses in the areas of choral conducting, vocal/choral pedagogy, and singing traditions and practices. Through participation in both the festival and symposium,
participants expand their knowledge of, and experience with, all aspects of singing and earn graduate credit at the same time. Enrollment is limited, so register early. For more information and application procedures, see our website at www.festival500.com or contact the Festival 500 office.

7) FESTIVAL 500 "SAMPLER"
Symposium presenters and/or delegates can take advantage of a two-day participation package for Festival 500, either July 6/7, or July 8/9 2009. This festival sampler offers opportunities to attend workshops, observe rehearsals and master classes, and hear choirs
