Sing Carmina Burana with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Can't Post

The English Arts Chorale invites singers in Surrey and Sussex (or elsewhere) to join them in a performance of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Hawth Theatre in Crawley on Sunday, 2 November 2008.

On Sunday, 2 November 2008, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will be coming to the Hawth Theatre in Crawley to present a programme that will include Beethoven's Egmont Overture, Mozart's Piano Concerto no 21, 'Elvira Madigan' and one of the most popular classical pieces for choir and orchestra, Carl Orff's Carmina Burana.

The performance will be directed by Adrian Partington with soloists Sarah Beth Briggs (piano), Natasha Jouhl (soprano), Mark Wilde (tenor) and Dawid Kimberg (baritone).

Written in 1937, and probably best known for its exhilarating opening movement, O Fortuna, Carmina Burana's tub-thumping rhythms, thigh-slapping drinking songs and lurid odes to strenuous Teutonic rumpty-tumpty made it a tremendous morale-booster for Germans during the second world war. But despite this dubious connotation, it has gained lasting popularity with choirs and audiences alike across the world.

The English Arts Chorale will form the nucleus of the choir that will give voice to the multilingual text of the piece, but would like to invite experienced and enthusiastic singers with youthful voices to join them in this wonderful opportunity. Ideally, you will have sung the piece before, or will be a very good sight reader able to learn the piece quickly.

If you think you'd like to be involved in this venture, come to an afternoon workshop on Saturday 13th September in Reigate 2.00 to 4.30pm . The cost for the workshop and subsequent rehearsals (also in Reigate) will be £10. Rehearsals will be on Monday evenings, but will include afternoon rehearsals (with the concert conductor) on the following Saturdays: 25 October and 1 November. Full details can be obtained from the English Arts Chorale's website at englisharts.org.uk or from our membership secretary on members@englisharts.org, by calling 01293 775583.
