Oct 3rd & 4th: Choral workshops for all from Spem in Alium to Barbershop Can't Post

Over the weekend of 3-4 October 40 choral workshops and concerts will be taking place at some of the most spectacular historic churches in England no longer used for regular worship to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Churches Conservation Trust.

Find a workshop near you at www.visitchurches.org.uk and vote for the song you want to sing to round off the celebrations.

Included among the 40 events are:

• Brian Kay – former King’s Singer and well known radio and TV presenter will lead a choral workshop of Gounod’s St Cecilia Mass at Wallingford St Peter.

• Harewood All Saints set in the stunning grounds of Harewood House near Leeds will host choral workshops by the Leeds Guild of Singers of music in 40 independent parts including Spem in Alium. Harewood All Saints is home to the UK’s most significant collection of alabaster effigies and tombs, dating from 1419 to 1510.

• The Village Quire will present an atmospheric, candlelit concert of West Gallery music in Richard's Castle St Bartholomew near Ludlow, with workshop in the afternoon.

• The Wessex Chamber Choir will hold a Victorian Choral Evensong in the magnificent church of Privett Holy Trinity in Hampshire.

• The Huntingdon Male Voice Choir will present a concert at All Saints Conington, Peterborough celebrating the role played by All Saints during the Second World War as a navigational aid to returning airmen from the UK and USA.

• Bedford Gallery Quire will revive the music of the old church gallery bands of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries at St Peter, Northampton – one of the most outstanding Norman churches in the country.

• Chordmasters male barbershop group will present their wide variety of material at Holy Trinity Goodramgate, one of York’s hidden gems where Hannah Beedham, known as the prophetess of Kelfield, was buried. She became famous for predicting the precise place and time of her death - in Kelfield, near Selby, at 9pm on Thursday, August 1, 1833. Thousands flocked to where she lay as the appointed hour approached. However, she outlived her prophecy.

• Award winning choir director John Fisher will lead the world renowned IDMC Gospel to St Mary’s, Sandwich to present a workshop exploring the vibrant sounds of gospel music.
