Georgian Polyphonic Singing - The Spiritual Voice

Frank Kane and Ian Turnbull

April 24 to May 1

The voice is a door to our deepest spiritual and energetic resources, and a medium for profound, intimate contact with our fellow beings. We will learn sacred and ritual polyphonic songs from Georgia, where singing plays an important role in community life. We will rely on oral transmission rather than sheet music for our learning, the goal being for participants to use their voices in new ways and to explore the very experience of singing as an expression of our whole selves and, with that, the creation of a strong and positive group spirit.

In this context, we will also draw on the skills and disciplines of the Findhorn Foundation to affirm and focus the spiritual element of our individual and group self.

Frank Kane has been performing and teaching the traditional polyphonic songs of the Republic of Georgia for twenty years and is the founder and music director of the Marani and Irinola vocal ensembles based in Paris. His work combines insights from other sources, such as the Alexander Technique, to create a voice teaching approach that can enrich any form of singing.

Ian Turnbull is a long-term member of the Findhorn Community and likes to sing and dance in all sorts of group settings, the community's kitchen for one.

Cost: £350 residential / £240 non-residential.
