Auditions vary. You might expect some or all of the following:
to sing a prepared piece of some sort
to sing some exercises to demonstrate your range and voice quality
sight reading
You should expect to be told in advance what the audition will cover.
Conditions are not always ideal. The last audition I did was in a domestic acoustic and with rather dim lighting. I got in though!
If you are not used to singing on your own then it would be an idea to have some lessons. If you go to a good teacher they should equip you to deal with the things that you would encounter in most auditions.
If it's a choir that you really want to join and you don't get in I would make a point of asking what you need to do to be successful at a reaudition. Some choirs let people in on a probationary basis if they think they need to do some work to get up to the required standard,
Ultimately however, if you don't pass the audition it's not the end of the world. There are plenty of other choirs out there, including many that make a point of not having auditions, who would be only too pleased to see you.
