'New' Mag & Nunc by Hooper - be the first to sing it in 400 years! Can't Post

Thanks to a generous grant as part of the BBC's Choral Ambition scheme, the Renaissance Singers (London) have had a wonderful opportunity to commission a new performing music edition of music that hasn’t been heard for centuries - and at the same time worthy of being resurrected!

Following extensive research the choir's conductor, David Allinson, came across a little known Jacobean composer called Edmund Hooper. In his lifetime Hooper was as highly regarded as his contemporary Orlando Gibbons, but now his music for the Anglican church is now largely - and unjustifiably - neglected.

On 30th September the Renaissance Singers will give the modern premiere of a forgotten Magnifcat and Nunc Dimittis by Hooper: The 'Flat' Service. The choir will present this fascinating work within the context of a service of Jacobean Choral Evensong, preceded by a short talk by David Allison on the exciting and challenging process of reconstructing the service from a single, incomplete source.

This event is free of charge and take place at the Priory Church of the Order of St John in Clerkwenwell, from 7-approx. 8.30pm

On Monday 4th October David will lead an Open Workshop for singers on Hooper’s music, also at St John's, from 7-9.30pm. Tickets for the workshop cost £10 (£8 concessions).
