Composing Competition Can't Post

The Thornesian Prize is a biennial composition competition in association with Chantry Quire, a Chichester based chamber choir.

The prize was founded in memory of Kathleen Slater, who died in 2002 from Parkinson’s Disease.

The aim of the prize is to raise both awareness of the illness and funds for the Parkinson’s Disease Society through the promotion of new choral music, something close to Kathleen’s heart.

Kathleen’s grandson, Christopher Larley, is the director of the Chantry Quire.

The piece should last between three and six minutes, and should take the format of a church anthem i.e. one that has a sacred text.

The text can be either biblical, from poetry or another source, and can be taken from anywhere, but with respect to any copyright laws.

Composers may write for accompanied (piano or organ only) or unaccompanied choir, SATB with no more than two divisions per part.

A panel of judges, all professional musicians with many years of conducting and compositional experience will adjudicate the competition.

Their decision will be final.

There is no age limit. The winner receives £300, and the runner up £100.

Composers will be required to submit three un-named copies of their score, marked only with a chosen pseudonym. Previous entrants must use a different pseudonym.

The piece must be previously unperformed and unpublished.

Tapes, CD’s or Sibelius files may accompany the entry, but these will not receive preferential treatment.

Adjudicators will not know the identities of the composer until a decision has been reached.

The copyright of the new work will remain with the composer. Chantry Quire reserves the right to perform the work at this and any future concerts.

Please email larley@ukonline.co.uk to request an entry form, or visit www.chantryquire.org.uk and download one.
