Siglo de Oro, a choir of young professional singers, will give a concert in the beautiful setting of Sherborne Abbey on Saturday November 19th at 7pm. The concert is one of several performances the group is giving across the UK of a programme celebrating the life of Spanish composer Tomas Luis de Victoria, who died 400 years ago this year. The first half of the programme uses music by Victoria and his friends and colleagues (including Ribera, Vivanco, Palestrina and Guerrero) to tell the story of the composer's life, exploring both his Spanish origins and his Roman career. The second half consists solely of Victoria's masterpiece, his Requiem Mass. Composed in 1603 for the funeral of the Habsburg Dowager Empress whom the composer served as personal chaplain and choirmaster, it is one of the musical masterpieces of the renaissance, written in an elegant polyphonic style that is at once technically sophisticated and emotionally direct. The choir’s conductor, Patrick Allies, was a Choral Scholar in Sherborne Abbey Choir before studying Music at King’s College London and Corpus Christi College Cambridge. Tickets, which are available from Sherborne Tourist Information Centre, Digby Road, Sherborne, 01935 815341 and on the door, are £10.
