Fed up with grappling with numerous bits of sheet music in the choir stalls? Help is at hand! Can't Post

John Baird, Medici Choir’s conductor and composer-in-residence, has edited and arranged The Anthem Book: 60 Favourite Anthems. The launch of this book will take place at the well-known Mayfair bookseller Henry Sotheran at 6pm on Thursday 14 June 2012.

The Anthem Book offers new arrangements of favourite anthems and is ideal for choirs engaged in expanding their repertoire of short pieces or motets for concert items and church services, while John’s contemporary output will equally appeal to choirs who enjoy singing both traditional and 20th Century music.

The book contains:

classic anthems such as Ave verum corpus, Jesu joy of man's desiring, O for the wings of a dove and Locus iste;

non-choral works arranged for SATB choir and accompaniment, including Sheep may safely graze, the St Anthony Chorale, the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria, Franck’s Panis Angelicus and Handel's Largo;

best-loved psalms laid out in such a way as to aid sight-reading for those less familiar with Anglican chant;

chorales from the St Matthew Passion and The Mastersingers plus an SATB version of the hymn Michael, by Herbert Howells, John Baird’s former mentor;

new twists on old favourites: Sleepers Wake! arranged as an a cappella SATB motet, and an SATB elaboration of Pachelbel's Canon, designed to be sung with the original work as accompaniment,
Alleluja, a movement of an original work whose premiere was acclaimed as ‘a masterpiece’, ‘exciting, uplifting, joyful and beautiful’.

Descriptions and samples of a selection of The Anthem Book and other works can be downloaded at http://www.johnbairdcomposer.co.uk, where you can also find details on how to order the book.

Date of launch party: Thursday 14 June 2012, 6.00pm-8.00pm. For an invitation please contact choirs@johnbairdcomposer.co.uk.

The Anthem Book (Aquarium, £9.50) is available to pre-order from http://www.johnbairdcomposer.co.uk from 14 June 2012
