London Choral Workshops - Spring/Summer 2013

It is with great pleasure that London Choral Workshops announces an exciting series of choral events for 2013. Following on from a successful and enjoyable first season held in London's St Sepulchre-without-Newgate this year, 2013 will see TWO series of workshops, one in London and one in Oxford, culminating in a weekend course singing in beautiful Oxford.

London Choral Workshops offer singers the opportunity to make music together while at the same time enabling attention to be devoted specifically to vocal issues. The workshops provide a relaxed and friendly atmosphere where we can work together without the pressures of preparing for a performance. These workshops are for anyone who wishes to develop their singing. Whatever your previous experience, we are sure you will enjoy and benefit from taking part; whether you have studied singing in the past or are contemplating your first singing lesson, these workshops will help inspire you to take your singing further.

The workshops are led by Jonathan Williams (conductor) and Fiona Dobie (vocal coach). Each session will focus on one broad area of vocal technique (posture, breath control, tone, etc) and explore it using physical and vocal warm-ups, technical exercises, rounds and of course, music from the choral repertoire. We have chosen some beautiful music, much of which will be well-known. This is to ensure that we have something of a head start learning the music and thus be able to devote attention to issues other than the notes. To make the most of these events, it would be beneficial to review the music in advance… but don't worry; you don't need to be note-perfect!

Saturday, 12 January 2013, 10.30am-3.45pm

Our first workshop is 'Stand up for yourself!'. Fundamental to healthy singing are good posture and effective breath control. The whole body is involved in singing - legs and pelvis, spine and ribs, head and neck, shoulders and arms - so in this session we will begin looking at which muscles to energise and which to release, and how to develop a healthy and effective posture, whether standing or sitting. Next, breathing in and breathing out - the most natural thing to do, but a source of much concern and mystery to singers (and conductors!). We will have a fresh look at this whole area and explore what is meant by 'good support'. Finally, we can go on to explore how this understanding of the way the body works can help us be present and aware while performing.

The repertoire in this session will provide a variety of opportunities to look at breath control:

· Bruckner - Locus iste

· Mozart - 'Requiem' and 'Dies Irae' from Requiem

· Carissimi - 'Plorate, filii Israel' from Jephte

· Brahms - Nos. 1 and 3 from 7 Songs, op. 62

· Whitacre - A boy and a girl

New Year Special! Cost: £35 or £30 each if you bring a friend. (NB this includes all refreshments, some useful handouts and all the music, which you can keep after the session...)

St Mark's Hamilton Terrace, Maida Vale. A few minutes walk from Maida Vale and St John's Wood tube stations.

Future dates for your diary include:

· Saturday 16 March: Stand up for yourself! Oxford – venue tbc

· Saturday 13 April: Finding the right tone of voice. London – venue tbc.

· Saturday 18 May: Finding the right tone of voice. Oxford – venue tbc.
