Invitation to Lea Singers Singing Day - Haydn Nelson Mass - Saturday 16 February and St George's School Assembly Hall, Sun Lane, Harpenden, AL5 4TD. Harpenden is only 30 minutes on the train from London with a short walk to St George's School. Please come and spend the day singing with The Lea Singers, conductor Benjamin Goodson, pianist James Sherlock and soprano solist Ali Langer, exploring and performing Haydn’s Nelson Mass. Haydn’s Nelson Mass is sub-titled Missa in Angustiis – mass for troubled times. It was written in 1798, when Haydn’s native Austria was at war with Napoleon’s France. The menacing Kyrie at the start of the mass reflects the mood of the time in war-torn Vienna. The Mass also contains moments of celebration, which may have struck just as resonant a chord. Days before its first performance, news reached Vienna of Admiral Nelson’s great naval victory over the French fleet in the Battle of the Nile. When Nelson visited Haydn’s patron two years later, the Mass was performed especially for him and thereby acquired its more familiar nickname. 10am – Registration and coffee 10.30 – 12.30 – Workshop 1 12.30 – 13.30 – Lunch.
