Russian, Bulgarian, Yiddish, Macedonian, Ukrainian, Belorussian and other songs taught by East European choir leaders Polina Shepherd and Eugenia Georgieva.
The choir sing traditional lyrical and epic songs, ritual calendar music for pagan holidays, seasonal songs, wedding songs and weeping songs from East European cultures. Everything is sung in original languages and carefully translated, transliterations are available too; we also talk about history and context of each song.
The choir welcomes members of all backgrounds and singing levels. Organized by UCL Hebrew & Jewish Studies and SSEES. The choir meet weekly during term time and performs several times a year. We are now preparing for a Trafalgar Sq. performance for the Russian Maslenitsa celebration in March and a slot at the Sangerstevne Festival in May and would love to have a stronger sound!
