Medieval music has been enjoying a resurgence of interest over the last few decades and, to be palatable in the modern concert hall, has inevitably had to create some new performance practices. Belinda will lead a workshop that transforms the most minimal of manuscript material into a performance practice accessible to audiences today. The repertoire will be drawn from the popular music of the time, vernacular songs from collections such as the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat, Cantigas de Santa Maria and Laude Spirituali. This repertoire lends itself with ease to choral performance. Our open workshops allow anyone with some experience of singing and an interest in Renaissance repertoire the opportunity to explore this music alongside members of the Renaissance singers.
Belinda Sykes was raised on a pure diet of English folk song, and is now an international concert and recording soloist. 2011 saw her solo debut at The Carnegie Hall, New York. Belinda studied voice and improvisation in Morocco, Bulgaria, Syria, Spain and India; oboe and recorder at the Guildhall School of Music. She has recorded and sung solo with Red Byrd, New London Consort, Tragicomedia, Harp Consort, Paul O'Dette, Ensemble Unicorn and Oni Wytars. Belinda is the soloist on Karl Jenkins' album Stabat Mater, with the RoyalLiverpool Philharmonic. She directs the medieval music ensemble Joglaresa. Belinda has a Masters Degree in Ethnomusicology (Arabic music) from London University's School of Oriental and African Studies and is Professor of Medieval Music at Trinity College of Music.
