THE LONDON RUSSIAN CHOIR is starting Winter term on 21 November. All welcome! Come and enjoy Russian harmony singing. Sessions are led in English by a Russian musician. Sheet music, translations and transliterations are available. Join any time. We have 2 performances coming up on 12 December and 19 March. The London Russian Choir promotes Russian harmony singing and traditional repertoire. The group now brings together over 40 music lovers of various ages and cultural backgrounds. Most members do not speak Russian but a lot of attention is paid to cultural context, history, language and stylistic features of the music. Based at University College London.http://londonrussianchoir.wordpress.com/ The choir's original repertoire includes traditional lyrical and epic songs, ritual calendar music for pagan and Christian holidays, wedding songs, dance songs and other folk. Another part of the repertoire represents much loved by native Russians Art Songs (Romances) from the 18-19 centuries, as well as more known pieces by Bortnyansky, Tchaikovsky and other classics. The choir is led by a Russian singer, composer, performer and educator Polina Skovoroda-Shepherd. Her grandfather, a veteran of the second war played bayan (button accordion) and her mother was a professional singer. Her training at Kazan State Conservatory gave her an academic perspective and the skills to create her own projects: The Polina Shepherd Vocal Experience covers many aspects of vocal music from solo voice to large scale choral improvisation or highly arranged and conducted choir pieces and smaller chamber groups. Polina performs and teaches internationally. http://www.polinashepherd.co.uk We rehearse in 26 Bedford Way WC1H 0AP (UCL) near Russell Square on Thursdays at 6.30-8.30pm during term. 2013-2014 Winter season starts on 21 November.
