Paid music director and choir chairman. can I? Can't Post

Hi,

Does anyone know the ethics about whether I, as the paid Musical Director of a choir, can become Chairman of the choir? I would be interested in both factual answers or views that you all may have. I must add that I am on the committee and this does not seem to present any problems.

Thanks,

Jim

Re: [jimtt] can I? [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't think it is a very good idea. I have been involved in choirs run by the conductor and found that very often he/she ended up doing everything - often because choir members didn’t feel able to disagree with the conductor or put their own ideas forward.

Also if the choir is a charity, the director can't (shouldn't) be a trustee. Most constitutions allow the director to be ex-officio on the committee but not a trustee. There may be times when the committee may wish to meet without the director.

Of course I don't know about you and your choirs personal situation Smile
