Holst Society message for 2023

A message to all choral societies and groups of singers planning this year to perform music during 2024. Did you know that 2024 is Holst 150, namely the 150th anniversary of the birth of the English composer Gustav Holst, born Cheltenham September 1874, died London May 1934? In 2022 we celebrated VW 150, the 150th anniversary of the birth of Holst’s lifelong friend, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958).

So let’s celebrate Holst in 2024.

Holst composed a huge amount of music for choirs, some 70 works:-

12 works for chorus/orchestra
9 works for chorus/ varied accompaniment
24 a capella works
25 works for female voices

And if you sing in a church choir, the sacred music on the SOMM label (SOMM CD 279) appeared in November 2022 (19 works) and the Christmas/organ music on the EM label (EMR CD 62) in 2019 (22 works). So plenty of music to explore.

There’s more to Holst than the Planets. So let’s get singing Holst in 2024 and celebrate the 150th anniversary of one of England’s greatest composers.

For more information and ideas, contact Chris Cope, Chair, Holst Society on chairman@holstsociety.org.
