Luminosa Sing Rousing Celebratory Music for Summer Can't Post

This summer Luminosa returns to St Peter’s Church, Petersfield for an evening of joyous music. This family of singers of all ages is celebrating the Coronation of King Charles III and, well, just because it’s summer! Straight into rehearsals following their Rachmaninov success in March, the Choir is singing with even more heart and commitment in this special historic year.
At the heart of the programme will be the beauty, serenity and force of Handel’s Coronation Anthems, an enduring masterpiece. Composed for the Coronation of George II and Queen Caroline, and triumphal from beginning to end, these four iconic Baroque pieces create a frisson of energy, particularly the first movement, ‘Zadok the Priest’. ‘Let Thy Hand be Strengthened’ is a reflective but heartening endorsement of majesty. ‘The King Shall Rejoice’, initially full of festive pomp and fanfares, yields to more gentle cadences. The final anthem is the refined and distinguished ‘My Heart is Inditing’.
Parry’s I was Glad, was written for the Coronation of Edward VII. Luminosa is honoured to include this piece in their concert. It sets out to achieve musically exactly what the opening words say. From the moment it begins, it is throbbing with vitality, and the first choral cloudburst of words sends a tingle down the spine.
The Choir is also delighted to be showcasing Gloria by Bob Chilcott. Revered as a contemporary hero of British choral music for his innovative, dynamic and joyful repertoire, this uplifting and jubilant four-movement work will provide a rhythmic shift and contemporary energy to the evening. Taking the mood from Vivaldi’s Gloria, Chilcott retains the freshness and clarity of Vivaldi’s textures which produces music which is simultaneously tender and profoundly expressive.
Luminosa Chamber Voices will bring an added dimension to the concert in their performance of pieces of a quintessentially British flavour.
Also performing will be the brilliant Connaught Brass Quintet. This thrilling young ensemble are quickly making a name for themselves as fresh talent in the chamber music world. Having already made their debut at the Lucerne Festival and London’s Wigmore Hall, this ensemble’s ability to manipulate and unify sound earned them first prize in the Inaugural Philip Jones International Brass Ensemble Competition (2019) and the Royal Overseas League Mixed Ensemble Competition (2022). Vibrant, spirited and bold, they are gathering accolades for their unique collective sound which they attribute to friendship and their individual musical personalities.
Conducted by their tireless, creative and talented Choral director, Rebekah Abbott, the Choir is also honoured to be supported by Michael Higgins who will provide inspiring organ accompaniment. Michael has performed throughout the UK at venues including the Royal Festival Hall (London), Symphony Hall, (Birmingham) and Usher Hall (Edinburgh). Fellow of the Royal College of Music, Michael has worked with conductors Daniel Barenboim, Gustavo Dudamel, Jiří Bělohlávek, and Sakari Oramo.
