Wells Cathedral Voluntary Choir celebrates 20th Anniversary and seeks new voices Can't Post

SmileWells Cathedral Voluntary Choir is celebrating it's 20th Anniversary and inviting new singers to come and join - Tenors and Basses particularly welcome.

Wells Cathedral Voluntary Choir was formed in 1986 to sing services in the cathedral when the professional choir was on holiday or performing elsewhere. It is an amateur, mixed voice choir trained to sing liturgical music, although it does occasionally become involved in concerts with a more varied programme. Singers live in the towns and villages around Wells but many travel up to 20 miles distance.

ShockedThe choir sings about fifty services a year in Wells Cathedral and also spends a week in residence providing the music in another cathedral - Winchester for 2006 and Canterbury in 2007. A typical week-end would mean singing at Evensong on the Saturday and at Eucharist, Mattins and Evensong on the Sunday. It is recognised that singers cannot cover all engagements, but a serious commitment is expected.

The choir accepts private engagements in the cathedral and outside (weddings, funerals, thanksgivings, etc.) for which a fee is charged. Being a liturgical choir there is no subscription nor music charges, but members do bear their own travelling expenses.

Rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings, usually in the Undercroft of the cathedral, from 7.45 to 9.15 pm. The choir also provides a vibrant social life for those who are interested - Pub visits after a hard sing, Christmas parties, BBQ's and more

The choir is fortunate to have as its director an ex Kings College, Cambridge choral scholar, Michael Cockerham, whose presence brings both prestige and expertise.

It is a real pleasure and privilege to sing in the cathedral and members put a great deal of effort into learning the music. The repertoire continues to increase and the choir constantly strives to improve its standard of performance. A reasonable standard of sight reading is expected and an audition is necessary - familiarity with the liturgy is useful. The choir is always glad to welcome new members: it is not big enough to get lost in nor small enough to feel too exposed. The members are friendly and anyone who enjoys singing church music would be hard pressed to find a more splendid place in which to do it and a more friendly bunch to sing with!

Further details can be found on our web site http://www.wellscvc.org.uk/ and you are most welcome to phone our secretary Mrs Debra Anderson on 012225-317808 or email debraadams@btinternet.com for further information.

WinkNew voices of all persuasions always welcome, and at the moment particularly Tenors and Basses.

Please feel free to come along and join us at a rehearsal or two before deciding if it's for you! Above all give us a try if you are interested in knowing more.
