Instrumentation etc Can't Post

I am convinced that, SOMEWHERE out there on the great and powerful web, there is a database that lists works, orchestral & choral, with details about instrumentation, choir, soloists, performance time etc etc. I just CAN'T find it! The library details on Gerontius don't really do it so.................

If there isn't one, maybe we should help each other out and compile one somehow?

Try the Musica International Database of Choral Music (http://www.musicanet.org/) for published choral music. However finding something exists and was or is published is very different from actually obtaining copies....

You could try jwpepper.com it is American but is very useful for some things and does have some mp3clips too. Worth a look anyway.

The Choral Singer's Companion by Ronald Corp (Batsford, London, 1987) has this for all the major choral works, but not orchestral unfortunately.

The good news is that there is a book which will answer all your queries!

The bad news is that it is expensive... I paid about £55.00 for mine about 4 years ago - but it is worth it!

Orchestral Music: A Handbook 3rd edition (1996) by David Daniels.

Published in the US by Scarecrow Press. You can get it in the UK but it may need a little chasing up.

It lists works alphabetically by composer with performance times, required soloists, orchestration, editions and so on.

Lots of appendices on suitable works for various combinations of voices/instruments, works by duration, composer anniversaries, thematic programming etc.

Published in 1996, there are obviously gaps but I find recent works have plenty of available information about orchestration.

I hope you manage to obtain a copy.

Kind regards.

Further to my first reply - there is a 4th edition!

· Merged with the American Symphony Orchestra League's OLIS (Orchestra Library Information Service)

· Enhanced specific information on woodwind & brass doublings

· Lists of required percussion equipment for many works

· New, more intuitive format for instrumentation

· More contents notes and durations of individual movements

· Composers' citizenship, birth and death dates and places, integrated into the listings

Encore - the catalogue of works held in British libraries can also be useful:
