Warrington Musical Society (WMS) wishes to appoint a new Musical Director to take up the position preferably in May 2019 when our long-serving MD will be retiring. Our accompanist will also be retiring at the same time. Both positions are salaried.
Established in the 1830s, WMS is one of the oldest musical societies in England. It is a mixed SATB choir of about 30 members and is administered by a small committee. We rehearse on Tuesday evenings (currently 19.30-21.00) between 30 and 40 weeks per year at Christ Church School, Padgate, Warrington, Cheshire. In recent years, we have performed three concerts each year in different Warrington churches.
The items sung by the choir in recent years have included a wide range of music suitable for a chamber choir from Byrd to Britten and beyond and taken from all nationalities and musical periods. Our Christmas concert combines carols and readings. We welcome singers of all ages who are prepared to give a high level of commitment to attending rehearsals and taking part in concerts. We do not audition. We use internal and external soloists for some (but not all) of our concerts; external soloists are often recruited from the Royal Northern College of Music.
The Musical Director is required to:
- select the repertoire for our annual programme of music;
- lead rehearsals and conduct concerts;
- work closely with the accompanist;
- select soloists when required;
- nurture and develop the choir.
If you would like to apply for the position, please email the WMS chairman, Dave Perfect (email@example.com), providing:
- your CV;
- where you are based;
- why you would like to direct our choir;
- whether, if shortlisted, you would be available to come to Warrington for a trial rehearsal.
