Stroud Choral Society is seeking a replacement for our current Musical Director, (MD) Huw Williams, who is leaving the choir in March 2020 after ten very happy and successful years with us. Huw is Director of Music at Bath Abbey. His immediate predecessor with us was Ben Nicholas, Director of Music at Merton College, Oxford. We are looking for an enthusiastic and inspirational MD with experience in all aspects of the choral repertoire who will continue to develop the choir. The successful applicant will take up the position in mid March 2020, although a postponement until 2nd September 2020 may be considered in exceptional circumstances.
We are a mixed choir of 130 members with a long and proud history. Members can audition to be part of a Semi Chorus which is used when smaller resources are required. Never afraid of a challenge, we recently commissioned Peter Ash to compose a new work, the Pelicantata, based on a book by Roald Dahl, which we performed in Bath Abbey. Always keen to encourage new talent, over the past 4 years we have formed our own children’s choir, who participated in the Pelicantata concert, and a youth choir. They are under the direction of their own talented conductor drawn from the main choir.
Our four annual concerts draw on a wide range of music encompassing the classical, modern and operatic choral repertoire. For our two main Spring and Autumn concerts, in St John Baptist Church, Cirencester and Tewkesbury Abbey respectively, we employ professional soloists and orchestras, such as Canzona, the Bristol Ensemble and the Regency Sinfonia, with whom we enjoy excellent relationships. For our lighter Christmas and Summer concerts, performed locally, we are joined by our children’s choir or youth choir and local, highly talented young soloists.
We organise annual choral workshops to which singers outside the choir are also invited. At the end of July we are embarking on a choral tour of Normandy, the second such tour in recent years.
We rehearse on Monday evenings in the Music Centre of Marling School, Stroud with breaks at Christmas, Easter, the Summer and bank holidays.
New members undergo a short voice test. The entire choir was similarly assessed earlier this year.
More details about us can be found on our website:
