Description

Warrington Musical Society (WMS) wishes to appoint a new Musical Director to take up post in September 2022, since our current MD, Seb Marshall, will be moving on after our next concert on 18 June. Thew new MD will work with our accompanist, James Heathcote. We can offer a salary of around £2,150 per annum, paid monthly by direct debit.

Established in the 1830s, WMS is one of the oldest musical societies in England. It is a mixed SATB choir and at present has 18 members. We currently rehearse on a Monday evening (19.15-21.30) between 30 and 40 weeks per year at Christ Church School, Padgate, Warrington, Cheshire and normally perform three concerts per year at Christ Church, Padgate. Previously we have rehearsed on a Tuesday evening (at the same venue) and would be able to move rehearsals to that night if necessary.

We have sung a wide range of pieces in recent years, including oratorios, requiems and traditional folk songs. We are currently rehearsing Haydn's Nelson Mass and some well-known traditional songs for the June concert. Our Christmas concert combines carols and readings. We welcome singers of all ages who are prepared to give a high level of commitment to attending rehearsals and taking part in concerts. We do not audition. We sometimes use internal and external soloists for our concerts; external soloists are often recruited from the Royal Northern College of Music.

The Musical Director is required to:

  • select the repertoire for our annual programme of music;
  • lead rehearsals and conduct concerts;
  • work closely with our accompanist;
  • liaise regularly with the WMS Chair and committee;
  • keep the choir informed about rehearsals etc;
  • select soloists when required;
  • nurture and develop the choir.
The closing date for applications has been extended to Sunday 11 June 2022. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to lead part of a rehearsal in due course.
